Life at 1011 North East Street!
Sigma Kappa at Illinois Wesleyan is proud to call 1011 N. East Street our home! Our house can be found right on the southern edge of campus and is a beautiful 4 story red-brick building. It's easy to spot and recognize as a Sigma Kappa house, with the large black ΣK letters and small silver letters over the big white doors. Walk through the door on the left, through our entry staircase, and you'll enter the first floor in our beautiful foyer.
On the first floor you can find our formal room, dining room, and brand new kitchen, as well as a bathroom, mailroom, and patio. Our entire first floor has been redone within the past 10 years and has a modern and sophisticated feel. The formal room is a room we use for studying, chatting with friends, playing the piano, or just reading a book! Our dining room is where we meet twice a day for lunch and dinner together. The dining room is newly painted with new curtains, tables & chairs, and has beautiful custom made bamboo flooring! Right outside the sliding door in the dining room is our brick patio. The patio is a great, private place for laying out, reading, and grilling out! Our kitchen is currently undergoing major renovations, and will be completely new when we move in fall 2011!! It's important to us to have our 24 hour, full-use kitchen and pantry that we can keep food in, cook in, and where we can share late night snacks together! The most important part to our kitchen is our amazing cook LeahAnn, who has been with us for over 20 years. LeahAnn cooks delicious and healthy meals, that cater to all types of diets and allergies.
Go up the stairs to the second and third floors, and you will find our bedrooms! In total, our house can hold 43 of our members, who are mostly from the sophomore and junior pledge classes. The 2nd floor has 13 bedrooms, a combination of doubles, triples, and a single. Our bedrooms are spacious, have new carpet, and most have brand new furniture! Each room has at least one bed for napping, relaxing, or an alternative place for sleeping. Also, each girl has her own desk, dresser, and closet! Also on the 2nd floor is our TV lounge, where girls hang out to watch our favorite shows each night! It's a great central location to watch movies and TV. We have plenty to watch, because our house has 2 satellite TVs and 2 DVR recorders! Our huge second floor bathroom is right down the hall. It's newly remodeled and has lots of light and mirrors. This bathroom is big enough for the whole house to get ready together in!
The third floor has four more bedrooms, lots of storage, a bathroom with a shower, and our two dormers. If you're new to the sorority lingo, our dormers are two, large rooms that have lots of beds in them. We are fortunate to have both a "warm" and "cold" temperature dormer and we all get to pick which ever we prefer! The dormers are kept dark and quiet 24-hours a day, and are great for a middle of the day power nap!
The last floor of our house, but certainly not the least, is our basement! The largest room of the basement is the lounge! The basement lounge area was completely redone during the summer of 2010, with brand new sofas, chairs, a desk giant flat screen TV, and decorations. This area is a nice BIG room to work with groups, have movie nights, and do workout videos. This room, and every other newly-renovated room in our house, would not be possible without out AMAZING alumnae! Our corporation board and alumnae work hard to provide us with our "wish list" of renovations and additions every year. We owe the beauty of our house to them!!
The rest of the basement is made up of our laundry room, library, and basement bathroom. All three rooms were re-decorated during the summer of 2010. The laundry room has two FREE washers and dryers, a folding table, sink, drying racks, and lots of storage for detergent. Our library is a great place to study or have group meetings! It's completed by an in-house printer, scanner, and lots of bookshelves to hold old textbooks, class notes, and a binder for each major.
Other features of our house include wi-fi throughout the entire house (and patio), full air-conditioning in every room, and keyless entry to the house! We also have a huge parking lot with assigned spots for every girl living in the house who wants one and extra spots for off-campus seniors and freshman. We are also next-door to Ames Library, which makes studying at the library extra convenient for us, as well as taking advantage of all of Ames' services.
All of the members of Eta are so proud of our beautiful home and are grateful for the chance to get to live in it. The warm colors, comfy furniture, smell of LeahAnn's cookies all contribute to the feeling of home that we all feel. 1011 is truly a home away from home for all of our past and present members. Yet, What is more important than any building is the people that fill it. Our chapter knows that we are surrounded by the best, our friends and sisters, who we are so lucky to live with every day.
We hope you've enjoyed this written-tour of our house and that it makes you want to come and check it out for your self! Check back here soon for pictures of the entire house, as well as updates on our brand new kitchen! Dove love <3
